VF-1A Rick Hunter Valkyrie – Macross 1983
I got this as a present from my parents in 1983. This is the model that Hikaro Ichinose (Rick Hunter in the U.S. release) started out with. He then went onto the J model which was white and red and finally the S model with the skull emblem when Rick Fokker died. I vividly remember seeing this in Japantown and was shocked when they got it for me because it was almost a hundred dollars. I have a picture from Christmas of me opening the box actually…This is the one that started it for me with Macross.
I now have all the original Takotoku and Bandai versions. I finally managed to get the blue/red Valkyries in the early 2000’s when Bandai did a re-issue. They’ve since done numerous re-issues of the various Macross generations but the first Macross is the one I grew up with. The featured image is the box that this toy came in but I’ve long since gotten rid of the box. I wish I had kept them because Takatoku was known for their great art work and the unique texture on their boxes.
Blue Legioss Alpha Fighter – 1985
Here’s the blue version of the Legioss Alpha Fighter from Genesis Climber Mospeada. Like the red one, I bought these from a store called Gemco in Daly City. The site is now home to a Target. I think I bought these as the original US release when it was still the Henshin Robo Legioss Afc-01H. They were released later as part of the Robotech toys from Robotech: The New Generation.
Red Legioss Alpha Fighter – 1985
The Red Legioss is part of the Genesis Climber Mospeada series. In the U.S. this was the final chapter of Robotech – “The Sentinels.” I never got into this series since they didn’t have the varied mecha like in the “Macross” or “Southern Cross” series that preceded “Sentinels.” I remember buying these two from Gemco (a mass market store that is now a Target). There was a green one which I thought I had but very possible my cousin has it. Still, I’m very happy to have them.
Mugen Calibur 1983 Takatoku
My cousin has this same toy, however, I can’t seem to recall how I got my Mugen Calibur 1983. I do know I got his on a trip to Japan. Anyway, he’s already made a post for this robot, complete with box. Still, I thought I’d make my own post so that I could catalog my entire collection.
Char’s Gelgoog – Gundam
Here’s the smaller 4.5 inch version of Char’s Gelgoog which I also have it in the big 7.5 inch deluxe version. I actually had some leftover red shoulder armor pieces from the lot from a different Gundam and they just happen to match with this guy. I think the shoulder pieces are from a Gundam Epyon from Gundam Wing but I think he goes pretty well with this guy too. I have always been a fan of the Gelgoog and Zakus. The combat armors for the bad guys have always been more appealing to me design and color wise.
GM Guncannon/RGM-89 Jegan (“Jim”) Gundams
Below are two variants of the GM (or otherwise known as the “Jim”) Gundams. One is the twin cannon variant and the other is the grunt/cannon fodder version that usually gets killed off right away.
Stilll image of RGM-89 From Char’s Counterattack
This still image is from Gundam 0079. I believe this is the one I have
Below is a later varient from Gundam Z/Zeta Gundam with just one cannon
Sandrock Gundam XXG-01SR Bandai America 2000
Here’s another one that I got as part of recently purchased large lot of Gundams. This one is the Sandrock Gundam XXG-01SR. He’s kind of cool with the blades in his hands and back. I spent many, many hours trying to piece these robots together as I was handed a bunch of loose arms, legs, shields, weapons etc….I’ve had to watch numerous YouTube videos to get them mostly right. Unfortunately, this guy is missing his right arm. I had to Frankenstein him as I had that left over arm piece. I then remember I had the blades but didn’t know which Gundam he went to originally, so I had to go back to my loose pieces box for those. The color is a little different from the show as they had different colors.
UFO Robo Grendizer 12″- Yamato Toys 2007
Here’s a vinyl 12″ Yamato UFO Robo Grandizer that I borrowed from my cousin. I was curious to see how much he might be and found the ST version of him in Japan for “only” 900 dollars. I believe they have made a Soul of Chogokin version and that might be a worthwhile option since the vintage version is out of my price range.
Heavyarms Gundam MSIA 4.5″ Bandai America 2000
Below are the Heavyarms Gundam from Gundam Wing. There’s an orange/white variant and the grey/white variant. The grey/white one is missing the right shoulder missile launcher. I got these two as part of 20 pc loose lot. I spent 5 hours one night piecing together various arms, legs, shoulders etc. I did pretty good – there were only about 3 Gundams that I couldn’t complete and I Frankenstiened two of them so that at least they could look functional.
